Herman Bavinck said of the study of theology:
"It is a priestly ministration in the house of the Lord. It is itself a service of worship, a consecration of mind and heart to the honour of His name."
The mind, as well as the heart, is to be dedicated to the honour of the God's Name. As the Apostle Peter says "Gird up the loins of your mind." The application of reason, logic and sound thought in the realm of Christianity are a form of worship. Too often in these times, the importance of the intellect in a Christian context and Spiritual setting are completely missed. Emotion is emphasised, "feelings" are made of paramount importance, and intellectual apathy is rife.
As Christians, it is important for us to engage the mental faculties that have been given to us. Society is against us, because from every side we are force fed with a thousand different world views. Media, whether journalistic or social, tell us to eat a certain way, dress a certain way, speak in a certain way, and yes - think a certain way. It has come to the point that the ideas and thoughts of most people are not really their own. Christians are not immune to this in any way. We have been marinated - so to speak - in the worldviews which surround us and so have taken on the "flavour" of the world. Too often we are passive, and not active in our thinking and reasoning.
That doesn't only apply to our attitudes to the world, but also within the Church. Too often doctrines, beliefs and traditions are accepted without any depth of thought. It is by no means my intention to cause controversy, but merely to promote thought. Christian thought. Above all else comes truth. Didn't Christ say "I am the way, the truth, and the life?" The motto "An veritas an nihil" ("The Truth or Nothing") should be ours.
So in light of all this, what is this blog for? This blog - for now at least - is a place for me to think "out loud". And you are encouraged to think out loud right along with me if you feel inclined.
I hope what follows is of benefit.
